Saheli Hosts Conference

Bridging the Cultural Gap
to Provide Effective Domestic Violence Services
to the Asian Immigrant Community

The conference took place in October, 2007, at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center in Concord, Mass.




Fourth Annual 5K Run/Walk for Non-Violence

The Annual 5K Run/Walk to Stop Violence Against Women
was held in Burlington, MA, on September 29, 2007.

Gift Certificates Given

The Limited, a well-known clothing and accessories company located in Burlington, MA, presented members of the Saheli community with gift certificates. On May 12, 2007, on the occasion of Mother's Day, Laura Valenti of the Burlington Store attended the Saheli monthly meeting. Nine lucky women were the recipients of $25 gift certificates to Kohls and other department stores.
Thank you to all the employees at the Limited.




Social Hour and Mela

A social was held on April 8, 2007, at Morss Hall of MIT.
The affair was open to all to come learn about Saheli, who
we are and how we help and support South Asian Women
in every way we can.

Available to attendees were

  • Food (will be available at nominal cost)

  • A time to build friendships and support

Woman of the Year 2005

India New England News selected Gouri Banerjee, coordinator of the domestic violence program, from among 20 distinguished South Asian Women on June 17th, for the award. Gouri has been leading the Saheli domestic violence program for nine years and is an Associate Professor of Information Technology at Emmanuel College in Boston. In making the award, the editor of INEN, Poornima Apte noted,

“Gouri Banerjee, a founding member of Saheli, the women's organization, is our 2005 Woman of the Year. Banerjee is being recognized not just for her achievements over the past year but for her contributions over the years as an active member of the community and for the many lives she has changed as director of the domestic violence program unit of the organization. She is an active volunteer in the mainstream American community as well and an associate professor of information technology at Emmanuel College. Banerjee's work empowers sisterhood at large and personifies the spirit of the award.”
