Domestic Violence Mental Health Counselor

Saheli is an organization dedicated to addressing the needs of South Asian immigrant women and their families with a pivotal focus on domestic violence intervention and prevention services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides culturally informed group and/or individual counseling to adults, children, adolescents, and families exhibiting mental health issues related to domestic violence.
  • Understand the survivors’ circumstances and provide acute crisis intervention, status evaluations, and case management services to counseling clients of Saheli.
  • Provide counseling and therapy to clients as appropriate to the position; prepare survivor service assessment and plan, mental health evaluations, make appropriate referrals, and follow up care programs.
  • Guide survivor in the development of skills or strategies for dealing with trauma related to abuse and domestic violence.
  • Consult with other staff, as appropriate; refer clients to appropriate service agencies as required.
  • Co-facilitate assigned support groups, including a regular weekday evening group
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members, and attend agency events, trainings and staff meetings
  • Maintain current and accurate records of services and regularly check and update client database in accordance with confidentiality guidelines.

Experience: Trauma Counseling: 2 years (Preferred)

License: LPCC, LMHC, LICSW (Required)

    • Fluency in a South Asian Language preferred.
    • Must complete comprehensive domestic violence training as soon as possible; documentation of similar training at another organization may fulfill this requirement.
    • Computer literate and proficient using email, Microsoft Office applications and some knowledge of databases
    • Valid MA driver’s license and a reliable transportation
  • This is a part-time 20-hours a week appointment
  • CORI check and two reference letters are required

Bilingual Domestic Violence Response and Prevention Advocate 

Saheli is a 501 © 3 non-profit organization dedicated to supporting South Asian women and families in the Greater Boston area. Headquartered in Burlington, MA, our mission is to empower South Asian women and families to lead safe and healthy lives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally competent direct services to domestic violence survivors and perform advocacy work around issues such as housing, benefits, employment, childcare, medical and dental care, education, legal matters, immigration, mental health and substance abuse
  • Provide coverage on a rotational basis for a 24-hour helpline for victims of domestic abuse and violence
  • Assist clients in South Asian languages and English to interact with police, attorneys, court officers and others.
  • Accompany survivors to police, court, public benefit services and shelter, as needed.
  • Co-facilitate assigned support groups, including a regular weekday evening group
  • Develop and maintain relationships with law enforcement, attorneys, housing authorities, DTA and DCF, healthcare providers and other community services.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members, and attend agency events, trainings and staff meetings
  • Maintain current and accurate records of services and regularly check and update client database in accordance with confidentiality guidelines.

Qualifications: 

    • BA/BS in social work, behavioral sciences, and other related fields preferred. But can be substituted with relevant experience.
    • Preference will be given to candidate with fluency in Bangla and English
    • Must complete comprehensive domestic violence training as soon as possible; documentation of similar training at another organization may partially fulfill this requirement.
    • Computer literate and proficient using email, Microsoft Office applications and some knowledge of databases
    • Valid MA driver’s license and a reliable transportation

Volunteer Opportunities

Outreach Volunteer

  • Run an outreach booth/table at various locations/events;
  • Set up and take down the booth/Table
  • Talk to the public about domestic violence and healthy relationships
  • Inform people about Saheli’s work, how they can donate,and how they can volunteer and advocate
  • Pick up outreach materials from and return materials to our office
  • Identify additional outreach opportunities and communicate them to the volunteer coordinator
  • Volunteers may help arrange events that are approved by the volunteer coordinator

Computer Literacy Volunteers

  • Teach basic computer skills to adults in small settings of 6 to 10 students
  • Teach a curriculum that includes basics such as: Microsoft Office, sending/receiving email, using the Internet, Google Drive and more
  • Engage students with interactive activities and be prepared to answer related questions to lesson plans.
  • Travel to the location and commit a minimum of 3 hours per week during class times for instruction

*Note: Technical support, resources, and materials will be provided to instructors

Communications Volunteer

  • Write engaging blog entries in your own voice on a variety of topics every once a week.
  • Brainstorm and research new topics for future blog entries to support ongoing development of the blog editorial calendar/plan.
  • Share updates from Saheli’s social media platforms, and participate in discussions among community members.
  • Deliver and spread the message of Saheli on social media, especially for projects and events.
  • Gather information/data from a range of sources (online research, telephone interviews etc.) to create original, engaging and relevant content for monthly newsletter

Events Volunteer

  • Assist on the event day for set-up, guest assistance and registration or clean up.
  • Work under the direction of various members of the event committee, staff or other volunteers with specific requests.
  • Event day volunteers will typically be asked to commit at least 3 hours.

Web and Graphic Designing Volunteer

  • Work with the Communications Coordinator to conceptualize and create print communications and digital graphics
  • Assist in developing the website to make it user-friendly and responsive
  • Provide other related assistance under the direction of the Communications Coordinator
