The City of Cambridge celebrated Diwali 2016 with great enthusiasm at the Cambridge Senior Center on Sunday, October 30th, 2016. Mayor E. Denise Simmons and Councilor Nadeem Mazen warmly welcomed a diverse group of fun-loving guests from across the Boston Metropolitan region. Saheli staff and volunteers helped at the event and worked as food servers and ushers.
Ms. Rupal Ramesh Shah with a team of friends and volunteers worked very hard to organize an impressive Diwali celebration. First a delicious free five course dinner prepared by Shalimar of India was served to all guests. Following dinner and dessert the cultural performances were introduced. A beautiful classical rendition of a song to Lord Ganesha opened the celebrations and was followed by sitar music, Odissi dance, songs from the movie Parineeta, a Jatiswaram in Bharatnatyam style, Bhangra and Giddha from Punjab and Hindolam Thillana, also, in Bharatnatyam style.
The organizers welcomed the guests very warmly and invited them to mingle and make new friends. This event was one of the best Diwali celebrations, especially because of its multicultural guests and organizers. Thanks to Mayor Simmons and Councillor Mazen the Diwali message of love, prosperity and peace was spread among the residents of the City of Cambridge.
