Saheli offers a range of culturally tailored legal advocacy services in various South Asian languages and Arabic. We assist survivors in navigating the complex legal system.
SAHELI PROVIDES
Legal Advocacy Program
Navigating the legal system can be overwhelming, particularly for immigrant survivors facing language, cultural, and immigration-related barriers. Saheli's Legal Advocacy Program (LAP) provides culturally responsive, trauma-informed support to help survivors understand their rights, access family law and immigration resources, and make informed decisions about their future.
COURT ACCOMPANIMENT
Saheli’s domestic violence advocates accompany survivors to the court and offer culturally and linguistically informed support during the proceedings.
REFERRALS TO IMMIGRATION AND FAMILY LAW ATTORNEYS
Saheli staff assesses survivors’ financial situation and refers them to lawyers who can offer pro-bono or low-cost legal services.
LEGAL CLINICS
Saheli works with a family law attorney to offer survivors free one-on-one legal consultations.
ASSISTANCE WITH LEGAL PROCEEDINGS AND DOCUMENTATION
Saheli staff assist survivors in obtaining restraining orders and other protection orders and provide assistance in writing affidavits and other legal documents.
ADVOCACY WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT
Saheli staff assists survivors in communication with law enforcement by helping the survivor to report incidents and offering culturally sensitive advocacy on behalf of the survivors.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
We offer cultural training programs for law enforcement, legal aid organizations, law students, and DCF. Saheli conducts "Know Your Rights" workshops in the community and provides information on family law and immigration law.
