Know Your Rights

In light of the current political climate, it is easy to feel confused about what one can and can’t do. Many immigrant women, not familiar with immigration law or who have been kept in the dark about their immigration status by their abusers, are afraid to venture out of the house, wear their ethnic clothes, and fear letting children out of their sight. While it may seem that with each passing day, the amount of restrictions and limitations on immigrants are increasing, it is important to recognize your guaranteed rights. All people living in the US, including undocumented immigrants, have certain Constitutional rights. If ICE knocks on your door you do not have to open your door, you have the right to remain silent, and you have the right to speak to a lawyer.

Saheli was fortunate enough to have three immigration attorneys, who are knowledgeable about the South Asian community, provide training to board members and advocates. Trupti Patel and Associates Joanna Golding and Chiara St. Pierre, of Burlington and Boston, provided training on how to move forward and process the recent court rulings, executive orders, and various other legislative changes. If you know someone who is concerned, please ask them to call the Saheli helpline at 1-866-472-4354.
